About Your Surgeon
Ms Diana Urbaneja is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon in Bridgend and Cardiff, specialising in cataract and glaucoma management, including laser procedures such as selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) and complex glaucoma surgery. After graduating from medical school at the Central University of Venezuela in Caracas, she completed her ophthalmology training in Madrid, followed by three glaucoma fellowships in Barcelona, Cardiff (University Hospital of Wales) and London, the latter at Moorfields Eye Hospital. Over more than 16 years in ophthalmology, she has performed more than 5,000 cataract procedures.
She currently serves as Glaucoma Lead for Cwm Taf Morgannwg Health Board, where she has contributed to reduced waiting times and earlier detection for glaucoma patients. Her ongoing research into acute angle closure glaucoma using anterior segment OCT aims to help identify patients at higher risk of the disease. She is also a member of one of the largest European investigation groups for the Paul Glaucoma Implant.

Common Questions
You can self-refer for a private consultation, or be referred by your GP or optician. If you are using private medical insurance, please check whether your policy requires a referral and arrange any pre-authorisation first.
Your consultation includes a full discussion of your symptoms and history, a thorough eye examination, and any diagnostic scans that are needed. Ms Urbaneja explains her findings clearly and agrees a treatment plan with you before any decision is made.
Glaucoma is usually a lifelong condition that needs regular monitoring, even after treatment. Ms Urbaneja agrees a review schedule with you based on your individual risk and how well treatment is controlling your eye pressure.
Timing depends on how your cataract is affecting your vision and daily life, and this is discussed at your consultation.
Yes. Ms Urbaneja is fluent in Spanish and can carry out your consultation in either English or Spanish, whichever you prefer.
Private consultations can usually be arranged promptly. Please contact our clinic team by phone or enquiry form, and we will offer you the earliest available appointment that suits your schedule across our Porthcawl or Cardiff clinics.
Yes, you are very welcome to bring recent reports, visual field analyses, or OCT scans from your local optician or optometrist. If your existing scans are current and clinically suitable, we will not need to repeat them or charge you for on-site diagnostic imaging.
Yes, for outpatient laser procedures such as Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) or YAG laser capsulotomy, same-day treatment can often be accommodated if requested in advance. Please let our team know when booking so that dedicated clinic time can be scheduled for your assessment and procedure.
